EADM 894: Principal's Short Course

Instructor:  Dr. Gulkin

Summer 2016  Summer Conference

EADM 894  allowed me to participate in the Principal's Short Course where we explored topics such as:

  • Leadership Frameworks

  • Student Voice Opportunities

  • Community Involvement

During the short course we were divided into cohorts and met twice daily with our group to discuss the concepts of the days topics.  The topics were presented by large group guest speaker format as well as smaller group breakout sessions. For our assignments, we needed to create a term paper outline that focused on our learning at the short course and application to research. We also needed to keep a thorough journal of learning throughout the four days.

Growing...

There have been many leadership and concepts that I have continued to implement into my teaching. Most recently I have been focusing on the importance that community has on our schools.  After attending sessions with Debbie Pushor, she has planted many seeds that are now starting to grow. To begin I have read " Beyond the Bake Sale" and shared it with our local SCC as a parent. I also shared and idea of hosting a student conference where community members come in to our school and lead short sessions on their talents. Finally I am currently researching and gathering data on how to best implement an SCC for a centralized, continuous enrollment Distance Learning School.

Insights & Connections

Over the years I have heard so much about how the Principal's Short Course is one of the best professional development opportunities.  Even though I have no current interest in becoming an administrator, I felt like I wanted to learn and connect with educational leaders.

These four days really were so meaningful and professionally and personally engaging.  The guest speakers were polished and passionate. Many of the messages that were delivered directly related to providing voice and choice in our classrooms. This is a personal passion of mine which is why I chose to write my term paper for this class on this exact topic.

The sketch on the left describes Michelle Prytula's advice on how visualizes being a leader: we need the heart, wings and the skin of a rhino to protect us. This image stuck with me and I think of it often as I work with different groups of teachers in my career.
