Growing...

I am grateful that I was able to experience this class early on in my Master's program and equally as thankful that it was over a full winter term.  This opportunity allowed me to learn, share and apply my understandings in so many meaningful ways in my career.  This class, that once started as seeds and loose roots is becoming a strong and integral part of who I am becoming as an educator.  The research theories and experiences have allowed me to continue to branch out into other areas of research in my career. Currently I am researching how we can incorporate authentic parent engagement in our online school. We are learning how best to start a School Community Council and how to make parents and families feel like they are a part of our virtual school.  I rarely look at any idea now without gathering research by a variety of methods before embarking on a plan.  Below is a link to a project proposal that I submitted and carried out last year in our school division. It was the skills of this class that gave me the confidence to take an idea, a seed if you will, and turn it into a solid tree that to this day continues to plant more seeds.  The project implemented coding into our school from Kindergarten to grade 12.  The project has now spread to many other schools in our division.

Insights & Connections

In the words of Dirk, this class " is a bit of a bear"!  I had spoken with other colleagues who warned me about this class. It's tough and I really didn't get much out of it and their advice was to " just get it over with." Needless to say I took their advice and thought let's just get this done.  I do admit that the seeds that had been planted sure didn't feel like they were getting the sunlight and watering that they needed. I had do this myself! I am proud to admit that this class gave me solid roots and allowed me to have a more solid understanding of what it really meant to not just be a teacher, but what it meant to be a scholar. Because of this class, I have been able to write grant proposals and carry out incredible learning opportunities for my students.  Now, I always look at everything with a critical eye because of the knowledge of research methodological that I not  only learned but applied.
