Growing...

Since this class, I have taken many of the concepts, models ( Khan E-Learning) and applied them t our instructional design model.  I have also been working with teachers to implement more successful synchronous opportunities. These range from weekly " hangouts" to share writing, to share critical analysis of literature, book talks, tutor groups.  We are also trying a " hybrid" class where students can decide if they would like to be part of a group in their online class that is paced with timelines or in a group where the pace is set by the individual. This allows the student to reflect on what type of learner that are and what online class is best for them.

Insights & Connections

It was fitting that I was took this class this past fall because my role in the division changed to Instructional Designer at our Distance Learning Centre. Our online school is a centralized continuous enrollment model that offers courses from Kindergarten to Grade 12, including AP courses.  At times during this class, I felt like we were learning about the " ideal" but the reality of our school allowed me to challenge some of our online discussions.  I agreed with many of the theories and concepts however we are currently struggling to implement some of these engagement strategies. An example of this would be a synchronous discussion or forum to engage and connect with our learners.

The assignments for this class were group work....in fact the groups were assigned. This was the first time I had to complete the projects as a group. Luckily my group immediately agreed upon a common topic, Digital Citizenship implementation course for middle years teachers. Our skill sets complimented each other and we were able to communicate effectively to complete out project. Some day I hope to meet my partners face to face!
