Winter 2017 Online Synchronous and Asynchronous/ Face to Face with Client

ETAD 874 allows students to apply the skills and strategies from ETAD 873 and other ETAD classes by working with a client. This class models a real life scenario that Instructional Designers would have by completing tasks such as:

  • personal analysis of skill set that can be offered to the design team

  • continuous collaboration with design team, client and course instructor

  • needs and user assessments

  • project timeline/ task planning

  • participating in online discussions with team, guest speakers, and instructors

  • completion of tasks and research to meet the client's goals and strategic plan.

We needed to prepare a needs assessment after meeting with our client face to face, create a project planning guide of action items and tasks, maintain weekly meeting notes with recordings from online meetings, prepare and present a mid-project report for our client and present our final project plan to client and instructor. Our team used Google Community, Google Docs/ Slides and Google Hangout to communicate effectively and efficiently with each other.

Growing...

Honestly, three years ago I really had no idea what the opportunities for instructional designers really were...it excites me to think that my new skill set will possibly provide me with new adventures...I am already looking forward to these seeds sprouting!  By being part of an Instructional Design team for this class has allowed me to better understand the team at my school.  Even though I am the only officially title Instructional Designer at our school, I draw on the expertise of so many to try to create the best learning opportunities possibly for our online students.  More recently, I was asked by a friend to help her design an online course for her Drug Free Life Program. Traditionally she visited classrooms as an Addictions Educator however she felt that the classroom teachers could lead these classes just as well as her so she wanted help putting her course into an LMS to share. It was such a rewarding experience. We are now testing it with a teachers for feedback before we share it with others. The seeds are sprouting!

Insights & Connections

It only seemed fitting that with ETAD 873 being my first class that ETAD 874 be my last.  It was certainly more challenging trying to recall what I learned from 873, almost three years ago however this class was a challenging and rewarding finale.  We were given a client that we had to work with to complete an instructional design need. My class was a group of 6...lucky 6 as we all had different skill sets that allowed us to meet the needs of our client.  The interesting fact about our group is that we were located all over Saskatchewan, even a member from South Africa but thanks to online connecting via Blackboard, Google Communities, and Google Drive we were able to effectively complete our project plans.  Our instructor also arranged for two guest speakers for our class as well. They were both experienced Instructional Designers who shared their filed experiencing with us.
